Pelatih Manchester City Manuel Pellegrini berhasil merengkuh trofi
pertamanya dalam musim debutnya di Etihad Stadium usai anak asuhnya
sukses memukul Sunderland dalam partai puncak Piala Liga di Wembley.
Keberhasilan
menjadi juara Piala Liga ini adalah yang pertama kali bagi Manchester
City sejak tahun 1976 silam, dan menjadi yang ketiga secara total
setelah sebelumnya mereka berhasil menjadi juara pada tahun 1970 dan
1976.
Pertandingan final berjalan seru. Tanpa diduga Sunderland
mampu memberi kejutan dengan mencetak gol cepat melalui striker pinjaman
dari Liverpool, Fabio Borini, ketika laga baru menginjak menit sepuluh.
Bahkan The Black Cats mampu mempertahankan keunggulan satu gol itu
hingga babak pertama berakhir.
Namun, Manchester City bangkit di
paruh kedua. Diawali dengan gol sensional Yaya Toure dan kemudian gol
Samir Nasri yang tidak kalah cantik satu menit berselang, City berhasil
membalikkan kedudukan menjadi 2-1. Dan Jesus Navas memastikan kemenangan
timnya dengan mencetak gol penutup di menit akhir pertandingan.
